Optometry Consultation Q & A

How Often Should I Have an Optometry Consultation?

Eye exams help catch eye problems early on when they are the most treatable. It is recommended that all children receive an optometry consultation before entering the first grade then annually or bi-annually after that to maintain their vision and ocular health. If you are in your 20s or 30s and do not have any problems with your eyes, it is recommended that you consult an optometrist every five years, then every two years in your 40s and annually after that. Of course, if you wear contacts or glasses, have a family history of eye disease, or have a chronic illness that can affect your vision, such as diabetes, you should have an eye exam every year.

What Should I Expect During My Optometry Consultation?

Dr. Chang will spend a few minutes discussing your medical history and any problems you are experiencing with your vision. She will then perform a series of tests in order to evaluate your eye health and vision. These may include a visual acuity test, a cover test, a color blindness test, retinoscopy, refraction, and slit-lamp evaluation along with other tests that Dr. Chang feels are warranted. While none of these tests are painful, you may have eye drops placed in your eyes to further evaluate your vision and ocular health. These drops may sting, but only temporarily.

Will There Be Any Lasting Side Effects From My Visit?

If your pupils are dilated during your optometry consultation, your eyes may be sensitive to light. This effect may take as few as 30 minutes or as long as a few hours to wear off. In the meantime, it is wise to wear sunglasses when outdoors and avoid situations where you would be exposed to bright lights. Otherwise, there are no lasting side effects from your visit.
