Cataract Evaluations Q & A

When Should I Have a Cataract Evaluation?

If you are experiencing a decrease in vision or have been diagnosed with a cataract, you should have a complete evaluation. Since other eye conditions can mimic cataract symptoms, Dr. Chang will take great care to examine your eyes thoroughly. You should only have a cataract removed when you feel it is causing problems. Dr. Chang will patiently and professionally assist you in making that decision.

What Will I Need When I Come for a Cataract Evaluation?

Because a comprehensive evaluation can be quite lengthy, you will want to bring some information with you to will help speed up the process. It is helpful if you bring a list with you of the following:

  • Any known allergies
  • Your medical history
  • Questions you might already have

For a thorough evaluation, your doctor will dilate your eyes. Because some patients report blurred vision for several hours after application of these drops, recruit a friend or relative to drive you home after your evaluation.

What Happens During My Evaluation?

Each successful diagnosis and treatment of cataracts begin with the most comprehensive eye evaluation possible. So that you do not have to continue to live with the vision loss caused by cataracts, Dr. Chang uses the most advanced testing available. Your safety and comfort are always considered.

The evaluation can take around three hours since it requires a thorough and multi-part examination. Some of the things you will be checked for are:

  • Vision, prescription
  • Motilities (how your eyes work together)
  • Eye pressures
  • Pupil size, shape, and reaction
  • Curvature of your eye

Cataracts may cause your eyes to be sensitive to bright sunlight or other lights. If this is true in your case, your evaluation will also involve a brightness acuity exam.

Should you decide to have your cataract removed, the surgery is done outpatient and is based on your desires, convenience, and medical coverage.
